Refraction and Reflection: Contemporary Queensland Glass is a celebration of the exceptional talent and innovation of Queensland’s glass artists. Showcasing the diverse and captivating work of five leading practitioners, including the recent outcomes of the Artisan Residency Program, in partnership with Canberra Glassworks. By spotlighting the brilliance of our local glassmakers, this exhibition promotes Queensland’s small but vibrant glass art scene and inspires a deeper appreciation for this extraordinary medium.

Artisan Residency Program - Emerging Regional Practitioner
Artist: Regi Cherini
Exhibition: 2 November 2024 - 1 March 2025

Regi Cherini, a contemporary artist awarded a residency with artisan, has spent much of her life in remote northern Australia. Her work, deeply rooted in exploring women's experiences amidst societal pressures and gender inequality, employs embroidery—a medium traditionally associated with femininity—to challenge conventional boundaries between craft and fine art.

By subverting the domestic nature of embroidery, Cherini creates bold, post-modern pieces that address issues of gender, equality, class, and culture. Her unique perspectives from living in remote areas infuse her work with originality, transforming embroidery from a traditional craft into a powerful tool for conceptual expression and societal critique.

ABOUT artisan RESIDENCY PROGRAM

The artisan residency is a new program for Queensland craft and design practitioners. Offered in partnership between Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and artisan, it selects outstanding individuals annually for a career-enhancing opportunity. The program provides resources for creating new works, developing skills, and connecting with fresh audiences. It includes both a residency and an exhibition component, aiming to be a transformative experience for both emerging and established craftspeople and designers in Queensland.
