--Literati Elegant Gatherings in Chinese Calligraphy and Painting

The exhibition is jointly hosted by Tianjin Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism and China Cultural Centre in Sydney, organised by Tianjin Museum. Elegant gatherings were vital social and creative events for Chinese literati, carrying a long history and profound cultural tradition in China. Paintings and calligraphies inspired by elegant gatherings stand as witnesses to these splendid culture.
Drawing from Tianjin Museum’s collection of paintings and calligraphy spanning successive dynasties, this exhibition features representative works themed on classic gatherings such as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, the Lanting Orchid Pavilion Gathering, the Nine Elders of Xiangshan, and the West Garden Elegant Gathering. It vividly recreates the rich cultural life of ancient literati, such as composing poems, playing chess and the zither, tasting tea and discussing philosophy amid forests and streams, offering valuable insights into the life and cultural significance of Chinese ancient gatherings.
