Exhibit: Southeast Shine - Art by Diamond Young
Streetlight Guild is honored to exhibit the debut solo show of new and selected work by visual artist Diamond Young. Born in Washington, D.C. and currently living in Columbus, Ohio, Young’s work is large, dynamic, and unapologetic in its interrogation of self-identity and Black joy as tangible praxis. Her work frequently wrestles with the question of nature versus nature, and whether there has ever been a need for the “versus” in the first place.
The artist on Southeast Shine
This exhibit creates visual biographies of what it’s like having a family that shelters their children from the challenging situations of violence, colorism, and drugs in Washington, D.C. The work attempts to interrogate viewers’ perception of family, and how we arrive at such definitions. Non-traditional portrait subjects and environmental settings seek to question and strip away preconceived notions of assumed identity.
About the artist
Diamond Young is an alumni of Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio, where she attained her BFA in Fine Arts in 2023. Young’s professional practice is mainly comprised of oil paintings, primarily portraiture and narratives showcasing the struggle between environmental substances and material conditions.
