Join us for the opening reception of this exhibit of photographs by our first Artist in Residence in our new Brooklyn home!Anthony Lozada is our first Artist in Residence and worked diligently through the months of November and December to print this incredible body of work in our darkroom here in Bushwick. Join us this evening to celebrate 2 months of hard work with exceptional results!
Exhibit Statement:
Tormentas Privadas (Private Storms) delves into the unspoken struggles and quiet resilience of the people of Bushwick, Brooklyn. As the neighborhood transforms under the pressures of gentrification and cultural shifts, this series captures the heart of a community often caught between adversity and hope.
Through intimate portraits and candid moments, Anthony Lozada sheds light on the private battles—emotional, economic, and social—that shape the lives of his neighbors. Each photograph serves as a window into the complexities of identity, belonging, and survival, honoring the strength and dignity of individuals navigating unseen storms.
Lozada’s lens reveals a Bushwick that resists erasure, celebrating its vibrancy and authenticity while preserving its humanity. This exhibit is a love letter to the neighborhood that raised him and a powerful testament to the endurance of its people.
Artist Statement:
Through Tormentas Privadas (Private Storms), I explore the untold stories and quiet struggles of Bushwick, Brooklyn—the neighborhood that shaped me. My photography seeks to capture the resilience, vibrancy, and beauty of everyday life, shining a light on the challenges often overlooked in public narratives. Each image reflects the complexity of a community in transition, celebrating its spirit while preserving its authenticity. Rooted in my own lived experience, my work stands as a testament to the dignity and strength of people navigating adversity, offering a visual archive of lives that deserve to be seen and remembered.
Artist Bio:
Anthony Lozada is a Latino photographer born and raised in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Deeply connected to his roots, his work captures the essence of life in one of New York City’s most dynamic and evolving neighborhoods. Lozada’s photography is driven by a commitment to documenting the resilience, diversity, and strength of marginalized communities. His current project, Tormentas Privadas (Private Storms), explores the hidden struggles and private battles within his community, offering powerful visual narratives that honor the beauty and authenticity of everyday life.
A graduate of Brooklyn College with a Bachelor of Arts, Lozada draws inspiration from his own experiences and a deep desire to preserve the stories of those often overlooked. In addition to his work in Bushwick, he has ongoing projects in Guatemala and Cuba, where he documents the lives of individuals confronting systemic challenges. Through his art, Lozada seeks to spark connection, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the human condition.
