About this Event
WRISE Los Angeles is excited to organize a guided tour of the in-progress Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing on Friday, October 17 at 10:00 am. The crossing is considered the world's largest wildlife overpass, designed to reconnect habitats fragmented by the 101 Freeway, saving the isolated Santa Monica Mountains lion population by allowing genetic diversity and preventing inbreeding. The tour will be led by Lauren Gill, California Deputy Director for the National Wildlife Federation. The visit will last about an hour and provide an up-close look at this landmark project that will reconnect habitats, protect wildlife, and serve as a global model for conservation and infrastructure innovation.
The crossing is currently in construction and is expected to be finished in 2026. This is going to be a popular event and will sell out!
More information about the project can be found here: https://101wildlifecrossing.org/
What to expect:
Parking: Free (but limited), please consider car pooling if possible.
Parking available at the Conservancy Parking Lot: 27571 Agoura Road, Agoura Hills, CA
We’ll meet at the southside trailhead. Exit at Liberty Canyon Road off the 101, drive down Liberty Canyon Rd, turn westbound on Agoura Road and park at the Conservancy parking lot approximately ¼ mile from the intersection. We’ll walk a short distance up the trail for a view of the Crossing construction site.
Restrooms: There are no restrooms on site.
Unfinished trail: Proper footwear is needed. The south side tour includes a short hike on a steep unfinished and uneven trail. The north side tour trail is flat, but also unfinished and uneven.
Sun: This is an outdoor event with areas of direct sunlight and can be quite hot, please bring sun protection and water.
Cancellations: Cancellations are possible on either side usually due to heat or rain. Flooding and unsafe trail conditions are possible even after rains have stopped. We will provide as much notice as nature allows us, the south side parking area can flood quickly. Visitor and volunteer safety is our top concern. We may be able to shift a south side tour to the north side in the event of flooding, and if so will send notice and/or direct visitors upon arrival.
