About this Event
Evergreens occur in almost every natural plant community in South Carolina. They are easy to spot against the otherwise gray landscape of winter. By using their characteristics of location, leaves, buds and fruit one can easily begin to identify them. Botanical names, such as sempervirens, meaning "always green", or Chimaphila, meaning “winter loving”, even give you a clue to their evergreen status. Join naturalist Tim Lee to explore the winter world of evergreens. Location: S.C. Botanical Garden; Conference Center, upper level
Please Note: All classes are open to the public. If you would like to pursue the South Carolina Native Plant Certificate Program, all core classes plus 4 electives are required for completion.
Some classes in the certificate program include fieldwork and can be physically demanding. We may use hiking trails with moderate difficulty. Participants must be in good physical condition and able to hike 1-2 miles without difficulty or assistance over terrain with steep sections, where footing will be uneven, with frequent tree roots, rocks, muddy areas and fallen tree trunks to climb or step over. Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are required.
