Evening of Hope: A Film & Panel Discussion

Homeless Garden Project (HGP) is thrilled to invite you to join us Downtown in the Grand Theater at the Del Mar for a chance to gather, celebrate and discuss Hope. We will start by screening National Geographic's 2021 Emmy-nominated documentary on Dr.Jane Goodall, entitled The Hope. The film documents Dr. Goodall's time with family in Tanzania and the approaching 60th anniversary of her arrival to the chimpanzee kingdom in Gombe. Following the film, we'll hear from a broad section of community members and leaders, such as noted author Jonathan Franzen about the role of hope in their lives.

Jane Goodall defines hope as action, much more than a feeling or a passive experience. Hope is fundamental to the change and transformation that we get to experience at the Homeless Garden Project almost every day–both in people and on the farm–and we are excited to share this film and reflection with you!

Proceeds from ticket sales will support HGP's award-winning transitional employment program for people experiencing homelessness. Last year, 94% of graduates obtained stable employment and 94% obtained stable housing within 3 months of leaving the program. We'll hear from a current trainee of the program about their experience. HGP goods, like those sold at our flagship store just down the street, will be sold in the lobby as well.

About The Hope:

This documentary, which premiered on Earth Day 2021, highlights the trajectory of Dr. Jane’s activism, the creation of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) as well as the formation of community-centred conservation programs implemented in regions near wild chimpanzee habitat. The documentary also covers the creation of Roots & Shoots, JGI’s youth program that now has thousands of members in more than 50 countries all around the globe leading projects that are helping people, animals and the environment. ‘The Hope’ also depicts Dr. Jane’s impressive mission to ignite positive change globally, causing her to travel nearly 300 days a year and to speak out on a number of major issues ranging from human rights to climate crisis. Told through a combination of archival footage, present-day stories and on-camera interviews, ‘Jane Goodall: The Hope’ is an inspirational story that explores Goodall’s vast legacy and charts the many paths that stem from one woman’s hope for a better future.
