Join us for a rare afternoon with the three producers of [e’Tzaintes] — Lee Amizadai, Armen Rizal, and Tzang Merwyn Tong — as they revisit a Singapore underground film once marketed as a “Reckless No-Budget B-grade epic Teenage Black Comedy.”
[e’Tzaintes], a Singapore film by three 19-year-olds, went on to gain a cult following, with underground screenings in Berlin, Munich, and Montreal, winning awards in the US, and even getting their film bootlegged and sold on VCD in Manila.
This talk will take you back to an era and aesthetic of pre-digital, low-budget anti-mainstream filmmaking that ran on heart, favours, friendship, compromise, and improvisation. These 3 filmmakers did it outside the system, with their friends — embodying the punk DIY spirit of resistance and creativity in Singapore’s media landscape during the 90s. Book your calendar. Bring your friends, your teachers, your collaborators.
Expect behind-the-scenes stories, screening of clips, and a raw, unfiltered conversation about the courage it took to be creative in Singapore — then and now.
