This course meets the ethics continuing competency for PA and NJ and professional code of ethics requirements.

Health disparities are gaps in the access and quality of medical care provided to individuals based on their age, sex, disability, race, color, religion or other potential vulnerability. Therapists have an ethical obligation to provide the same quality of care to all patients, regardless of their personal characteristics. This is an increasingly challenging imperative in our volatile, partisan landscape.
In this introductory lecture, we will delve into the ethical challenges surrounding healthcare disparities, exploring how inequalities impact access, treatment, and outcomes across different populations. By the end of the lecture, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the ethical dimensions of healthcare disparities and be better equipped to contribute to efforts aimed at promoting equity in healthcare delivery.
Key Topics:
1. Understanding Healthcare Disparities: An overview of what constitutes healthcare disparities and how they manifest in real-world scenarios. We’ll explore statistical data and case studies highlighting the gaps in care experienced by various demographic groups.
2. Ethical Principles in Healthcare: A review of foundational bioethical principles ( justice, beneficence, non-maleficence, and autonomy), and examples from professional Codes of Conduct. We will discuss how these principles apply to the context of healthcare disparities and the ethical dilemmas they present.
3. Case Studies and Real-World Examples: Examination of specific instances where disparities have led to ethical conflicts. These case studies will provide insights into how disparities can affect patient care and outcomes, and how ethical decision-making plays a crucial role in addressing these issues.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this lecture participants will be able to:
1. Describe the four bioethical principles as they apply to ethical decision-making.
2. Discuss common healthcare disparities encountered in therapy clinics and the ethical conflicts that arise from them.
3. Identify 3 strategies to adopt that will help you to recognize health disparities and steps to take to reduce them.
