Adoption is a lifelong process. Many issues can arise over time for the adoptee, birth family and adoptive parents that can create ethical dilemmas for professionals who are trying to best preserve the rights of each party. In this session, Sabra Starnes, a seasoned adoption professional, adoptive parent, therapist and adult adoptee who has experience a closed adoption, will delve into the current and past laws in the United States related to accessing identifying information in closed adoptions. The urgency and relevance of this topic cannot be overstated. Sabra will share some of the factors that must be considered by professionals who are supporting the triad to navigate the process with each member ethically and effectively. Special focus will be placed on the ethical responsibility that adoption workers have to support the adoptee through this emotional journey.

- Participants will explore some of the clinical challenges of ensuring all the rights of the triad in accessing identifying information.
- Participants will discuss the emotional impact that not having access to genetic and identifying information can have on an Adoptee.
- Participants will analyze the current and past laws on accessing identifying information in closed adoptions in the United States.
- Participants will discuss the obstacles adoptees can experience when using genetic DNA, the Internet, and social media to access identifying information independently.
