Eternity In An Hour a unique reimagining of the Bhagavad Gita
On Tuesday 15th October at Oxford International Song Festival, contralto Jess Dandy and pianist Keval Shah will be giving the world premiere of Eternity In An Hour, a concert-meditation-ritual combining Western art song and five new Sanskrit songs by Indian-American composer, Reena Esmail.
Esmail’s songs are settings of portions of the Bhagavad Gita, a central scripture of Hinduism and Vedantic thought. The songs will be interspersed with songs from the western Lied canon, all connected by linking improvisations, creating an unbroken dialogue between European and Indian classical cultures and soundworlds, and exploring ways in which the philosophical traditions of East and West converge and diverge, often in unexpected ways.
The event, taking place in the historic Holywell Music Room, demonstrates the power of song to bridge diverse communities if we dare to draw on new soundscapes, new perspectives, and new formats. Eternity In An Hour is accompanied by a whole day of events shining a spotlight firmly on Indian culture, including a presentation of Bhagavad Gita manuscripts at the Bodleian Library and a late-night Sitar & Tabla concert from Jasdeep Singh Degun & Sanju Sahai.
There will be a pre-concert talk with Jess, Keval, and Reena from 4.15 until 4.45pm in The Weston Library Lecture Theatre.
