About this Event
We are delighted to support the launch of ‘Essays on Salt–The First Harvest’ a publication by artist Désirée Coral. Join us for an in conversation between Désirée, Designer and Co-editor Killian Dunne, and Print Technician Neil Corall. During the event the contributors will reflect on the making of the publication from conception, design and printing.
'Essays on Salt–The First Harvest', examines salt’s role in labour, trade, preservation, ritual and power. The publication compiles the voices of fourteen contributors and their reflections on salt and its narratives. These texts reflect on the complexities of food systems and human relationships, using salt as both material and metaphor.
The event and publication is supported by Outerspaces funding artists and artist communities.
About the Publication:
Essays on Salt–The First Harvest
'Essays on Salt–The First Harvest', marks a significant chapter within the project and will
culminate in a publication featuring contributions from artists, researchers, and practitioners from diverse disciplines. These texts reflect on the complexities of food systems and human relationships, using salt as both material and metaphor. Through historical, political, ecological, and sensory lenses, the publication examines salt’s role in labour, trade, preservation, ritual, and power.
Salt crystals develop through the clustering of smaller crystals, often called seeds, which come together to form larger structures. Each layer and seed plays a crucial role in determining the crystal's shape and stability. These crystals grow gradually as water evaporates, adding new crystals to form communities. Salt crystals serve as a metaphor for structured systems, where every element is vital like in societies, yet no two are exactly alike in form or importance. The book, 'Essays on Salt–The First Harvest', compiles the voices of 14 contributors and their reflections on salt and its narratives. The crystal-like structure of the layering and the conceptualisation of the book reflects the diverse contributions of artists, thinkers, and creators involved, prompting us to engage in varied conversations about salt.
This publication is possible to the generosity of Outerspaces funding artists and artist communities.
