Join us at the esea ArtClub for a Bamboo Drawing Workshop on 17th Oct at 11 am!
About this Event

Join esea ArtClub on Thursday, 17th October, starting at 11 am for an engaging and free creative workshop tailored for East and Southeast Asian elders aged 50 and above.

Under the guidance of creative practitioner Xincai Tan, participants will have the opportunity to construct their own interpretations of various forms of bamboo. During the session, they will be taught how to paint trunks, branches, and leaves using different strokes and techniques. Furthermore, they will understand a few principles of inscription in Chinese traditional painting, especially for bamboo forms. This session will be a space where participants can learn to create beautiful and meditative art forms of bamboo independently.

Tickets for this event are free, but spots are limited, so be sure to secure your place by booking in advance.

Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to connect, create, and celebrate at esea contemporary. We can't wait to welcome you to our in-person workshop.

About Xincai Tan

Growing up as a migrant, Tan’s artistic methodology explores the hybridity of cultures, combining techniques and mediums from different schools. He has received art training from art schools and institutions such as China’s School of Calligraphy in Beijing, esea contemporary, and the Chinese Brush Painting Society in the UK. His artworks have been collected both privately and by public museums including the Museum of Cider in Hereford. Tan is a member of the Chinese Brush Painting Society in the UK and the Poetry Society of Hainan, China.

Tan has been a dedicated member of esea contemporary’s ArtClub since 2019.

About esea ArtClub

Begun as a research project in 2018, the Dumpling Social Club is the longest community-oriented project initiated by the former Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art. Now reestablished as esea ArtClub, the fortnightly art club is open to the elderly (50+) members from local communities.

Throughout the pandemic, esea ArtClub members continued to meet up virtually and gained confidence in experimenting with various mediums of art-making. By offering creative opportunities to people of less-represented age groups and from a range of economic, social and cultural backgrounds, esea contemporary continues to review its community responsibility and the social dimension of participation.

If you are interested in supporting or participating in the group, please get in touch at [email protected] or call 0161 832 7271.

About esea contemporary

esea contemporary is the UK’s only non-profit art centre specialising in presenting and platforming artists and art practices that identify with and are informed by East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) cultural backgrounds.

esea contemporary is situated in an award-winning building in the heart of Manchester, home to one of the largest East Asian populations in the UK. Since its inauguration as a community-oriented visual arts festival in 1986, esea contemporary has continuously evolved to establish itself as a dynamic and engaging space for cross-cultural exchanges in the British art scene, as well as in a global context.

esea contemporary aims to increase the visibility of contemporary art practices from the East and Southeast Asian communities and their diasporas. It is a site for forward-thinking art programmes that beyond exhibitions also include commissions, research, residencies, publishing, and a wide range of vibrant public events. esea contemporary values creativity, compassion, interconnectedness, and collectivity in implementing its mission.
