Equinox Earth Songs: An Evening with Terry Hermsen

Come hear poet and songwriter Terry Hermsen for a soulful evening of ecologically informed love, outrage, mourning, wit, and joy. In poems and songs, Terry will trace the existential shift into eco-awakening and belonging, inviting us with him into this journey of creating restorative Earth practices through art, community-building, and restorative engagement with the land. Terry Hermsen has published four books of poetry: 36 Spokes: The Bicycle Poems (1985); Child Aloft in Ohio Theatre (1995), The River’s Daughter (2009), which was co-recipient of the Ohio Poet of the Year Award in 2009, and A House for Last Year’s Summer (2017). He taught for the Ohio Arts Council for over 20 years, visiting schools all across the state; conducted poetry night hikes in over a dozen state parks; and taught at Otterbein University from 2003 to 2017. Over the past six years, he has helped to found a group called ROAR: Regional Ohio Action for Resilience, looking for climate change action in central Ohio, and spearheads local events and initiatives on native pollinator restoration, including both arts-based and actual hands-in-the-soil engagement. He has an album of activist songs raising awareness about the climate crisis entitled “Dance Floor at the Edge of Time,” which he has performed in six states over the past three years, and he has spent the last several years bringing Cadine Navarro’s visionary art of prairie seed-songs, “It Sounds like Love,” to broader audiences. He and his wife Leslie play a lot of Scrabble and cultivate a small prairie in their yard. Currently he is translating the poetry of Chilean poet Christian Formoso, centering in his masterpiece The Most Beautiful Cemetery in Chile.
