End of the Road Farm will be hosting an Equine Emergency First Aid course and a Disaster Planning and Prevention Course on April 25/26. Equi Health Canada instructor Courtney Gledstone will be back to walk us through handling equine emergencies while you're waiting for your vet to arrive.
Basics like how to take vital signs so that you can relay that info to your vet, how to identify colic, choke, and laminitis. Bandaging and wound care. Administering medication and other valuable information. Reviewing first aid kits, and supplies to have on hand.
The Disaster Preparedness course will cover how to plan for evacuation, what to have prepared in case of fire, both wildfire and premise fire. We live in an area that sees both wildfires and flooding. Having a plan can keep both owners and horses safe.
The photos below are from a course that Courtney taught here a few years ago. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. This doesn't take the place of veterinary care but it helps to know what to do, and what not to do until you can talk to your veterinarian.
I have also included a few photos of injuries we have dealt with. Horses seem to find a way to hurt themselves or get a belly ache despite your best efforts and care.
Cost is $195.00 for the weekend. Includes snacks and lunch both days. We have paddocks and camping spots for horse and owners.
