Equal Futures: Belonging, Race & Culture – From Awareness to Action
About this Event
Stockport is home to an increasingly rich mix of races, cultures, ethnicities, faiths and communities.
But what does it really mean to create a community – and a workplace – where everyone feels that they belong?
Our next Equal Futures EDI Conversations & Networking event will be hosted by Stockport Race Equality Partnership (SREP) and will focus on race, ethnicity, culture and belonging.
Led by Aba Graham from SREP, we'll explore Stockport's changing communities, hear directly about the lived realities behind the statistics and consider what genuine cultural inclusion looks like in our workplaces.
We'll celebrate the different cultures and perspectives that contribute to our borough, while also creating space for an open conversation about racism, inequality, exclusion and some of the challenges experienced by people from minority ethnic backgrounds.
Most importantly, we'll bring the conversation back to practical action.
We'll explore:
- Who makes up Stockport's communities today – and how that picture is changing
- Race, culture, heritage and identity
- Lived experiences of belonging and exclusion
- The challenges facing different communities
- Cultural differences in the workplace
- Communication, faith, religious observance and cultural practices
- Creating psychological safety and allowing people to be themselves at work
- The difference between authentic inclusion and tokenism
- Anti-racism in practice
- Practical steps employers and managers can take
Alongside our speakers, there will be opportunities for round-table conversations, shared learning and networkingwith other local employers and professionals.
