Watermelon Day at the Enterprise Farmers Market is going to be a day of mouthwatering fun!Whether at a backyard cookout or a beach picnic, nothing says “fun” like watermelon season in the South. The refreshing summertime staple will be celebrated with fun and games Saturday, June 29, at the Enterprise Farmers Market.
The annual Watermelon Day activities will feature farmers with fresh peak-season produce – not only watermelons but cantaloupes, tomatoes, peppers, squash, onions, and a variety of other fruits and vegetables.
The produce growers at the Market have been working hard to get ready for the event, and hope to welcome a great crowd of people who can enjoy the beautiful and tasty rewards of their efforts.
Handmade crafts will also be available for the shopper seeking unique items ranging from woodcrafts to embroidery, soaps and jewelry.
Event organizers hope everyone will take advantage of everything that’s available at the Market. However, on June 29, the watermelon will take front and center stage. Watermelons will be for sale and will be featured in some fun and exciting contests.
Come and compete in or watch the Largest Watermelon, Watermelon Eating, Seed Spitting, and Rolling contests.
The market opens at 7 a.m. with the produce and arts and crafts vendors ready to greet customers.
The watermelon festivities will kick off at 8 a.m. with a welcome by Mayor William E. Cooper.
Farmers or backyard gardeners who want to enter their contenders in the Biggest Watermelon Contest are invited to be at the market by 8 a.m. for the contest at 8:30. A prize will be awarded to the watermelon that weighs in the heaviest.
The ever-popular Seed-Spitting Contest starts at 9 a.m. In the past, winning spitters have made their mark with spits as long as 28 to 30 feet. Challengers can start practicing now to develop their skills for the perfect way to propel the tiny watermelon seed the farthest distance possible!
Winners will be determined in four age categories, so we invite everyone to join in the fun.
Previous winners include Lorenzo Harrison and Angelia Lane, who are expected to be back to try to recapture the title of Watermelon Seed-Spitting Champion.
The action-packed Watermelon Rolling Contest begins at 10 a.m. for rollers ages 5 and under, 6 to 9, 10 to 13, 14-17 and (yes adults, this contest is for you too!) ages18 and above.
The highlight of the day is the challenging, hilarious and very messy Watermelon Eating Contest, which begins at 11 a.m. The competition is for ages 6-8; 9-11, 12-14, 15-17 and 18 and above.
This is one of the most anticipated events of the year, so we invite you to come and participate and, at the very least, enjoy the entertainment of the contest.
Event organizers remind you that it's never too early to start practicing your eating and seed-spitting techniques and to build up your endurance for the rolling contest.
