The man known under the alias ‘E. St. Vráz’ traveled in the 1880s to 1910s through northern and western Africa, the USA, South America, and southeastern Asia. As a writer, photographer, and lecturer, he helped introduce the non-European world to the Czech public during a crucial phase of the Czech national revival. He also created natural history and ethnographic collections for Czech museums. His real name, place of birth, and national origin remain obscure. When his first letters and articles from western Africa appeared in Czech newspapers in 1885, the author was utterly unknown to Czech patriots. He admitted that ‘E. St. Vráz’ was just a pseudonym and that he was born and raised abroad but chose to pledge allegiance to the Czech nation. Vráz gained popularity not only in Bohemia and Moravia but also among the numerous communities of Czech emigrants abroad.
This lecture will present the colorful life story of Vráz, his work among Czech communities in the USA, and discuss his cultural and intellectual legacy for the present day.
Free and open to public.
