About this Event

Join us for an engaging conversation with Alyshia Gálvez, author of Eating NAFTA: Trade, Food Policies, and the Destruction of Mexico, hosted in collaboration with Curch of the Living Hope. This timely talk explores the human impact of trade agreements on food systems, migration, and public health, centering the voices and experiences of those most affected.

The event will be held at the Church of the Living Hope, home of the Cabrini Coalition, who have generously offered their space for this community gathering.

Come for the conversation, stay for the community. Admission is free, but RSVPs are required.

About the Author:Alyshia Gálvez is a cultural and medical anthropologist and professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at Lehman College, as well as anthropology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her scholarship focuses on the intersections of migration, health, citizenship, and food systems.

Gálvez’s research critically examines how economic and trade policies impact food practices, public health, and community identities in Mexico and Mexican immigrant communities in the United States. Her acclaimed book, Eating NAFTA: Trade, Food Policies, and the Destruction of Mexico (University of California Press, 2018), explores the transformative effects of trade agreements on Mexican food systems and their broader social and health consequences.

In addition to Eating NAFTA, she is the author of two earlier books: Patient Citizens, Immigrant Mothers: Mexican Women, Public Prenatal Care and the Birth Weight Paradox (Rutgers University Press, 2011), and Guadalupe in New York: Devotion and the Struggle for Citizenship Rights among Mexican Immigrants (NYU Press, 2009).

Currently, Gálvez is conducting new research on food, health, and nutrition epistemologies, as well as exploring colonial legacies in higher education through a personal writing project titled “White Nonsense.” Her work bridges rigorous academic research with an ongoing commitment to social justice and community engagement.

About the Cabrini Coalition: Cabrini Coalition is an interfaith group formed and supported by three neighborhood churches (St. Francis De Sales, Brick Church, and Church of the Living Hope), with additional support from local businesses and other organizations in East Harlem and the Bronx. Our mission is to follow in Mother Cabrini’s footsteps by offering practical and spiritual support to immigrants, particularly children, in our neighborhood. We are focused on working with East Harlem residents.
