About this Event
This year the annual Teagarden Lecture in the Department of English & Creative Writing will be given by Professor Paul Gilroy (Emeritus Professor of Humanities at University College London).
Paul Gilroy has been one of the most insightful and influential thinkers of the last four decades. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, the Royal Society of Literature, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was awarded the Holberg Prize in 2019, given “to scholars who have made outstanding contributions to research in the humanities, social sciences, law or theology,” and the Holberg Committee praised Paul as “one of the most challenging and inventive figures in contemporary scholarship. His work has influenced, and, in some cases, reshaped several fields and sub-fields, including cultural studies, critical race studies, sociology, history, anthropology and African-American studies.”
The Teagarden Lecture series has been endowed by an anonymous donor and allows the Department of English & Creative Writing to invite scholars with a Black British background to speak to students and staff at Exeter.
The talk starts at 4.30pm and there will be a drinks reception after the lecture from approximately 6pm to 7pm.
