Join Occento Choir and Orchestra for an evening celebrating the grandeur, humanity and spiritual vision of the late Romantic era.
The concert opens with Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry’s magnificent Blest Pair of Sirens, his exhilarating setting of John Milton’s At a Solemn Music. Widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in the English choral tradition, the work combines blazing orchestral colour, radiant choral writing and an unforgettable climax, making it a thrilling opening to the evening.
At the heart of the programme is Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, the composer’s final symphony and one of the supreme masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire. From its wistful opening to its awe-inspiring passacaglia finale, the work unfolds with extraordinary emotional depth, blending moments of tenderness, nobility and immense dramatic power.
The evening concludes with Parry’s rarely performed Magnificat, a radiant and deeply expressive setting of the Song of Mary. Rich in lyrical beauty and symphonic imagination, this neglected masterpiece reveals Parry at the height of his creative powers. Seldom heard in the concert hall, it offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience one of the hidden treasures of British choral music.
Together, these remarkable works form a programme which brings together two of the nineteenth century’s greatest musical voices in a celebration of faith, humanity, and artistic vision.
