Formed in 1985, The Upbeat has been a driving force in ska, roots reggae, and rocksteady for four decades. Known for their politically and environmentally conscious lyrics, the band quickly built a reputation for high-energy performances and timeless grooves.
In 1993, they launched their debut five-track demo, earning national airplay and compilation spots with labels like Epitaph/Hellcat Records, Moon Records, and SRH Productions. Their 1995 full-length release sold over 5,000 copies and brought the band into surf, skate, and snowboard culture through features in Transworld Video Magazine and on Fox Sports Network.
As their touring expanded across the West Coast, The Upbeat shared stages with legends including The Skatalites, Burning Spear, Sublime, Sugar Ray, Toots and the Maytals, No Doubt, Bad Manners, The Specials, The Selecter, The Wailers, Fishbone, Steel Pulse, The Abyssinians, and The Twinkle Brothers.
The band followed up with Backyard Knowledge in 2000 and Shuku in 2010, showcasing a sound that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. After 40 years, The Upbeat remains as passionate and relevant as ever, uniting audiences with music that uplifts, challenges, and inspires.
