About this Event

Encrypted Embroidery is a design system supported by the Data Reclamation Handbook both created by Sophie Nadel.

In an increasingly all-encompassing technology environment, the practice of encrypting information in embroidery encourages users to store their information offline. Not only does embroidery allow for slow, meditative creative practice, it also recentres a craft historically dismissed as ‘women’s work’.

Do you have an address important to you? A password or secret phrase? Translate it into a hidden code and embroider it on your belongings to keep it with you, but out of reach of prying eyes that aim to hold all your data.

Participants can bring something they wish to embroider directly onto. The workshop includes needles, scissors and crafting materials.

Sophie is a designer, developer and creative technologist. Her practice focuses around creating new pathways into technology that are becoming increasingly popular or necessary in order to make these spaces more accessible and encourage critical engagement through casual and fun activities, often using the lens of textiles. She works in the analogue, digital and often the space between the two.

Can We Start Again? is a computational arts festival and exhibition by Phreaking Collective, centred on a technospeculative examination of our digital ecosystem. Born out of distress towards the corporate and surveilled state of computation, the programme combines critical reflection with speculative and optimistic perspectives on digital culture, asking whether we're too far past the tipping point, whether we can correct course, or whether we can start again.
Spanning a physical exhibition, talks, and workshops, the programme explores digital ecology, AI, technological acceleration, and the social impact of emerging technologies — building a space to imagine an alternative future for computation, if we're ever given the chance.
