Enchanted Slime Mould Forest

For our 10th anniversary, we’re bringing back some of our favourite experiences from over the years, including an expanded return of Sarah Lloyd’s much-loved 2018 exhibition.
Unfortunately named but astonishingly beautiful, slime moulds (myxomycetes) are some of the strangest organisms on Earth. Neither plant nor fungus, these ancient amoebae appear like jewels, coral, lacework, or alien architecture on decaying logs, stumps, and forest litter.
Self-taught naturalist and internationally known myxomycologist, Sarah Lloyd OAM has spent nearly two decades documenting slime moulds on her property in northern Tasmania, collecting thousands of specimens, co-authoring academic papers, and helping establish the area as a globally significant hotspot for myxomycete diversity. This immersive exhibition features a display of Sarah’s stunning photographs, dozens of real specimens painstakingly collected and preserved by Sarah, and microscopes revealing their intricate hidden worlds.
Sarah Lloyd will give two floor talks on:
Saturday 15 August 11.00am
Sunday 16 August 1.30pm
Sara Lloyd will be in attendance at the exhibition from Friday 14 August through Sunday 16 August.
This event is part of Beaker Street Festival
Smart, surprising, and seriously entertaining: Beaker Street Festival is bringing its signature mix of science, art, and connection back to Lutruwita/Tasmania this August. Beaker Street Festival is Tasmania's annual celebration of science and culture.
🗓️ 6 – 17 August
📍 Lutruwita / Tasmania
