Meet the Author
Teaching for over a decade, Marissa McGee has read hundreds of children's books. One day, she decided she had a story to tell and picked up a pen. As an anti-bias educator, she is passionate about creating stories that serve as mirrors and windows for children. Free the Curls offers an accessible introduction to concepts of fairness, diversity, and the importance of being a changemaker. Maliyah’s story has been used in TK-12 classrooms to spark meaningful conversations about injustice and agency. Additionally, it serves as a mirror and window for children. Marissa taught K-2 in Washington, D.C., and was honored by NPR Ed in their Special Series, Great Teachers. She later became an instructional coach and now serves as a District Coordinator of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Marissa holds a BA in Sociology and an MA in Elementary Education from Stanford University.
