About this Event

On Tuesday November 19th, join us for a thought-provoking event titled "Addressing Violence in South Asian Communities through Film and Literature" . The event is brought together by creatives and community leaders to explore the power of storytelling in tackling issues such as domestic violence and gender-based discrimination, and how we can work together within our South Asian community to create a safe and violence-free society.

The opening remarks will feature the following speakers:

Dr. Balbir Gurm - Nursing Faculty KPU & Facilitator NEVR.

Dr. Asma Sayed – Vice President Equity & Inclusion, KPU.

Balraj Kahlon – Founder & Owner, Kahani Pictures Executive Director, Listen ("ਸੁਣੋ")


The panel discussion will feature the following speakers:

Inder Nirwan – Founder & Owner, Kahani Pictures

Meena Dhillon – Managing Lawyer, South Asian Legal Clinic of British Columbia (SALCBC)

Atreyi Bhattacharjee – Graduate Academic Assistant, Centre for Migration Studies, University of British Columbia

Cherylynn Bassani – Professor, Department of Sociology, Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Jennifer Jordan – Director, Student Rights and Responsibilities Office, Kwantlen Polytechnic University.


This event is proudly brought to you in partnership with the South Asian Legal Clinic, One Voice Canada, Moving Forward, Kahani Pictures, and NEVR.

Partnerships:

The South Asian Legal Clinic of BC is a non profit organization which is working to advance access to justice for South Asian's living in British Columbia by providing pro bono legal services, advocacy, public education, and engaging in law and policy reform initiatives.

One Voice Canada is a non-profit created to support vulnerable migrants, primiarly students. One Voice was founded in 2019 to address the pervasive abuse and exploitation of international students.

Moving Forward is an innovative non-profit agency that provides low barrier counselling and support to anyone who needs it, across Canada.

Network to Eliminate Violence in Relationships (NEVR) Society brings together various sectors to address and prevent relationship violence. Through education, networking and sharing, NEVR breaks silos to address the issue of relationship violence (RV).
