empowerED! Libraries and Archives EDI Conference

Bi-Borough Libraries and Archives has been on a journey since 2019 to become the most inclusive library service in the UK, and this vision has driven a number of service developments over the last five years. In 2023, we made a commitment to become an anti-racist service. To truly achieve this commitment, we must recognise the systemic practices and processes that continue to disadvantage the most vulnerable in our communities and be brave, innovative and proactive in dismantling and rebuilding fairer and equitable services that are accessible to all.

We have made some great process on the journey but know there is so much more to be done. We know that not everyone will fully engage in the work we do, that not all key stakeholders will view this as a priority, and that there is a significant culture change required across the sector.

The aim of this conference is to create a safe space where libraries and archives professionals and stakeholders can understand the ways in which libraries and archives can contribute to driving equality, diversity and inclusion across their communities. By exploring key topics, sharing good practice and facilitating discussion, we hope to inspire and equip attendees with the confidence and motivation to initiative change in their positions.

We are excited to announce more details about the day! Below is just an outline of what we have lined up, with more details on our fabulous speakers to come soon!

The conference has been designed to create safe and engaging spaces for discussion, learning and skills development.

We have:

• Panel discussions on the subjects of anti-racism and engaging young people through games which will platform voices from a range of organisations and sectors on these topics
• Workshops for practical skills development and learning on the subjects of queering spaces, inclusive library services and decolonising archives
• A showcase for flash EDITalks from partners and colleagues in services around the country showcasing amazing EDI initiatives
