An 8 Week Series
TUESDAYS | OCT 6 - NOV 24 6:45-8:15pm
Sliding Scale $240 - $300
Emotions are often poorly understood, treated as taboo, or regarded simply as problems to overcome. They are powerful and can sometimes cloud our judgment, leading us to act in ways that harm ourselves or others. Yet emotions also serve essential purposes. Given the tools and time to understand their functions, meanings, and our own characteristic emotional patterns, emotions can bring us closer to others, reveal what we value most deeply, and help us embody our highest aspirations. This course is based on Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB), a 42-hour secular training that emerged from a dialogue among the Dalai Lama, Buddhist scholars, psychologists, and neuroscientists. CEB integrates contemporary emotion science with contemplative practices to help participants develop clearer intentions, more stable attention, and deeper insight into the lived experience of both enjoyable and difficult emotions.
Through meditation, reflection, discussion, and interpersonal exercises, participants will learn to map emotional episodes, recognize their personal triggers and habitual “scripts,” and become more aware of emotions as they arise in themselves and others. The course also introduces practices for cultivating mindfulness, loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity. The aim is not to suppress emotion or remain calm under all circumstances, but to create greater freedom within emotional life: freedom to determine whether an emotion calls for action, how best to express it, and how to respond in ways consistent with our values. In this way, emotions can become sources of information, connection, resilience, and meaning—supporting both our own well-being and the well-being of those around us.
