Emily's Hampstead Heath Walking Book Club - December - The Secret Garden
About this Event
This absolutely enchanting classic follows young Mary Lennox as she struggles to adapt to her new life as an orphan in her guardian’s forbidding Yorkshire home. Hope comes in the form of a hidden garden, which holds secrets of its own… This is one of my very favourite books (across all genres!), celebrating nature, resilience and above all the magic of human connection.
Context warning: Please note that this was first published in 1911, when attitudes towards race and The British Empire were very different - some of the language in this book reflects this, and readers may find this offensive. In choosing this book for discussion I am not condoning these historical attitudes.
Our December events feature a Seasonal Book Swap - so please bring along a pre-wrapped, pre-loved title from your shelves to give to your fellow walkers.
Children (who have read the book!) are encouraged to join us for this one!

N.B. Please ensure that you have read the book BEFORE coming on the walk - or it risks spoiling the event for other walkers. If you've don't quite have time to read the book, please consider instead joining the Monday evening Zoom, for which reading the book isn't a prerequisite.
