EMERGING SCENE: MEET ME HALFWAY – OPENINGA group exhibition with photography students and graduates: Gabriele Bizzo, Benedikt Burger, Daniela Creanga, Lina Czerny, Avery Edelman, Saskia Darija Gettel, Marie Gutierrez Oliva, Michel Kekulé, Julia Krasnoperova, Lia Lemkuhl, Thero Mamani Valles, Ada Retegan, Tanya Sharapova, Barbora Svejnochová.
For the second time, the festival presents the EMOP Special Emerging Scene, a format that lends young photographers a voice and a venue. Following the success of the joint exhibition for EMOP Berlin 2023, Drängende Gegenwart. Der Blick der jungen Generation (Urgent Present. The View of the Younger Generation), six Berlin and Potsdam photography training institutions are once again exhibiting works that have emerged from their respective programmes.
Participants include the Lette Verein Berlin, the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie, the University of Europe for Applied Sciences, the HTW Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin, the International Photography School, and the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences.
In conjunction with the EMOP Berlin 2025 leitmotif what stands between us, the Emerging Scene was called upon to conceive and submit works that address socially and sociopolitically relevant issues in the face of a present-day reality marked by a variety of conflicts. Because this generation of young artists is particularly affected by the upheavals and existential crises of our time. Marie-Luise Mayer was invited to curate an exhibition with its own focal points from a total of 36 submissions. The result is Meet Me Halfway:
IF EVERYONE ONLY LOOKS INWARDS, DOES THE OUTSIDE GET BIGGER AND BIGGER?
The grey – that which stands between us, which separates us – shouldn’t be understood as a separation, but as a connection. This grey is mobile, it’s malleable, it speaks many languages, and it has agency. The students’ works selected for this year’s EMOP Special reflect a desire for understanding. Tendencies towards alienation are met with empathy, gaps filled with ideas, images created that promote understanding. There are also moments of searching and of leave-taking. The group show demonstrates that our coexistence can be seen as a way of practicing understanding and that while social fragmentation and passivity are phenomena of the present time, they also harbour opportunities if individual freedom is not practiced as a hyper-individualism, but as a universal condition and language. The very different photographic positions gathered here raise numerous questions concerning identity, relationships, power dynamics, social participation, and mechanisms of perception – and translate them into images.”
