Eve Gil presents her embroidery workshop by inviting people to delve into Polish folk embroidery.
As part of the Queer Futures exhibition programme, artist Eve Gil presents her embroidery workshop by inviting people to delve into Polish folk embroidery, exploring themes of migration, nationality and identity, particularly LGBT+ identity.
Participants will be introduced to the importance of folk embroidery in Poland and throughout the wider Central and Eastern European nations, its historical and modern value. Hand embroidery was a skill practiced primarily by rural women throughout Central and Eastern Europe. It was used to extensively decorate textiles for clothing and home use, and in some cases for sale, unfortunately these skills have sharply declined in the recent 100 or so years, through many reasons.
Embroidered clothing historically spoke of the wearer’s personal life and social status to everyone that saw their clothing. Eve invites participants to consider what they want their clothing to speak of to the public and how that could be expressed through embroidery. She is interested in working with people’s personal beliefs, and questions of identity, particularly those of nationality, patriotism and LGBT+ identity, and how inspiration from the exhibition can be linked and worked through folk-inspired embroidery.
Eve will be introducing participants to hand embroidery by inviting them to learn 3 basic stitches together. They will then be invited to look through the reference books, consider the patterns and visuals of them, and create a pattern that they want to embroider.
Free workshop, drop in. We especially welcome participants of CEE & Queer identity, however, it is open to all. Note: Participants must be over the age of 12 due to sharp objects etc. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
About the artist:
Eve Gil is a Polish-Welsh multidisciplinary artist, predominantly working with textiles. She works with recycled and sustainable materials, to create pieces with a past, present and future. Eve is deeply passionate about inviting people into art making and has been working as a community artist.
