Discover the expressive power of fabric as a medium for storytelling and design in this hands-on workshop led by Laura Marsh, a multidisciplinary artist known for her vibrant, text-based textile works. Participants will merge text and imagery to create bold, meaningful compositions within embroidery hoops. Through guided instruction, you’ll learn foundational hand-stitching techniques that balance precision with creative freedom—bringing your ideas to life through thread and texture.
Embroidery has served as a form of adornment, communication, and cultural expression for over 30,000 years—practiced across traditions in both the East and West. Today, it continues to thrive as a contemporary art form, bridging fashion, fine art, and personal narrative. This workshop invites you to tap into that lineage, using needle and thread as tools for self-expression and storytelling.
Participants will:
Learn essential hand-stitching techniques
Explore the relationship between text, image, and material
Develop a finished embroidered piece that conveys a personal or conceptual statement
About Laura Marsh
Laura Marsh is a textile artist with a social practice whose works—ranging from spheres and flags to immersive installations—feature humanitarian texts and social mottos. Drawing from two generations of women who sew, she embraces an accessible, DIY approach that fosters dialogue around feminism, gender, and class. Marsh holds an MFA from Yale University and a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Her work has been exhibited nationally at venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Printed Matter, and Dimensions Variable. She is currently an artist in residence at Mana Contemporary and the Director of Programming at Oolite Arts.
