Embracing Hardship Yields Compassion and Love

At the age of 17, Renee Katz was an accomplished pianist, vocalist, and flautist attending New York City‘s High School of Music and Art, where her graduating class was the one that the movie and television show Fame was based on. But just days before her graduation, she was viciously pushed from a subway platform into the path of an oncoming train.

Despite multiple subsequent surgeries and years of rehabilitation, she would never play her piano or flute again. But Renee’s story is one of transformation. She embraces rather than suppresses hardship, and believes that that philosophy ultimately yields compassion and love—the greatest gifts of all.

Following a harrowing experience that could have permanently thrown her into the depths of despair, Renee Katz, a sparkling soprano, has become a shining light in the New York and national music scene.

Her most recent highly acclaimed show and CD, entitled Renee Katz Sings Irving Berlin: Lost in His Arms, led her to be selected by Times Square Chronicles as one of the top cabaret artists of 2024, calling her performance “the most heartwarming show of the year.” This show is dedicated to her beloved father, recently deceased, and honors the immigrant experience and profound gratitude and patriotism that both Irving Berlin and her father shared for the United States of America, as well as the pride they had in their Jewish heritage.
