Emancipation Day 2026
About this Event
The Hon John Anderson AC FTSE will be our guest speaker at our annual Emancipation Day breakfast this year. He was Australia's 11th deputy prime minister, and since retiring from politics in 2005 has carved a new career as a public intellectual and broadcaster through John Anderson Media. He is also one of the founders of the international organisation the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship, along with Jordan Peterson and Baroness Philipa Stroud, and is the founder of its Australian cousin - Aspire.
John is a defender of Enlightenment and Judaeo-Christian values, which are the bedrock of Australian culture.
When the British, followed soon by other European nations, banned slavery and enforced that ban around the world, it was the first time the universality of human rights was recognised. But this recognition is not universal, even today. For example slavery is a recognised institution under some versions of Sharia law with one of the "Isis brides" who has returned to Australia, and her daughter, charged with slavery offences under ss 268 and 270 of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth).
This makes it even more important to recognise and celebrate this day. Slavery has never been part of the law of Australia, just as the equal dignity of all has always been part of the ethos of being Australian. At a time when there are challenges to our national values, and even arguments as to what they are, this is one that we can all affirm.
