About this Event

Black Heroes October Live Sketching Session | Comics, Superheroes & Heroic Stories Art for Black History Month

Draw inspiration from iconic Black heroes, legendary superheroes, and mythic storytelling this October at the Firepit Art Gallery.

This Black History Month, we're celebrating legendary Black superheroes and the art of heroic storytelling through live sketching. Hosted during Features From The Black exhibition, a breathtaking showcase of Black art from the diaspora exploring the mythical, the contemporary, the historical, and the urban, we invite you to channel the power, grace, and resilience of Black heroes onto the page.

Whether you're inspired by Marvel's Black Panther, DC's Storm, indie comics, or the real-world heroes shaping our world, this October sketching session transforms admiration into visual narrative. Expect dramatic poses, cinematic framing, dynamic compositions, and the kind of expressive energy that makes comic panels leap off the page.

This isn't a class. It's a creative community.

We create a welcoming, warm environment for all backgrounds, demographics, and skill levels. We don't instruct; instead, we invite participants to share. We believe art connects people, and sharing improves creativity.

What to Expect?

Part 1: Hero Warm-Up & Dynamic Compositions

Quick sketches and mood studies capturing the essence of heroism: power, resilience, defiance, dignity, triumph. Explore posture, expression, and the visual language that makes a hero feel heroic. Then move into dynamic compositions inspired by comic panels, film stills, and graphic novels. Think dramatic angles, bold silhouettes, cinematic lighting, manga-style perspective, and the kind of expressive gesture work that tells a story without words.

Part 2: Heroic Narratives

Layer your own stories onto the page, whether that's a character moment, a scene of resistance, a celebration of joy, or a personal reflection on what heroism means to you.

Throughout the session:

  • A space for complete beginners to feel comfortable and confident.
  • Room for experienced artists to push composition, perspective, and narrative impact.
  • Playful prompts and visual references to spark creativity.
  • Real community, expect conversation, collaboration, and connection.

Why This October Matters?

Black History Month celebrates the contributions, achievements, and stories of Black people, past and present. Superheroes and myths matter because they show us what's possible. Comics show us resilience, power, and humanity in bold strokes. This session invites you to create your own visual mythology, inspired by the heroes who inspire you.

The session runs alongside "Features From The Black" at the Firepit Art Gallery, a major exhibition exploring Blackness through historical, contemporary, mythical, and urban perspectives. Perfect opportunity to experience the full creative atmosphere.

About the exhibition:

Curated by Axematic, Features From The Black showcases a wide range of Black art from the diaspora, offering perspectives from emerging artists who are navigating the challenges of being born, living in, or being culturally tied to The West.

Rather than setting strict parameters of a narrow subject matter or theme, the exhibition aims to communicate the narrative of Blackness through four main facets: the historical, the contemporary, the mythical, and through urbanisation. These facets are themes and subjects favoured by Black artists, who despite huge progression, continue to be criminally under-represented even in today's art world.

In a period of heightened Black Awareness (Black History Month), this exhibition aims to remind viewers that Blackness – its joys and its woes – must be appreciated not just in October, but across all 365 days of the year. And, despite massive strides being made, parts of the art world still have a long way to go in reversing its historical prejudices and needs to actively support and encourage Black art today.
