The first performance of Elgar's 1st Symphony was an unprecedented and immediate success, with a hundred further performances across the world within just over a year of its première. Its abundant thematic beauty, exquisite adagio, and its passionate finale reveals Elgar at his finest.
With its haunting theme and unusual string configuration, Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is one of our best-loved pieces. Notable for its full, shimmering sounds and its flowing, interwoven themes, this performance will take full advantage of the cathedral acoustic.

Peterloo Overture by Malcolm Arnold was written to commemorate the centenary of the first meeting of the Trades Union Congress. It portrays the unfolding events of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. With a lament for those killed and injured, it ends with a triumphant assertion that such sacrifices are not in vain.
