The first show of the 2025 - 2026 season at Elmwood Playhouse is also its 400th production: the Amrican classic drama "All My Sons" written by Arthur Miller and directed by Derek Tarson. The play takes place in the backyard of the Keller family's suburban home after World War II, where their lives are still deeply affected by the war. Joe, a successful manufacturer, profited from selling defective airplane parts during the war, an act that led to the deaths of 21 pilots, including his own son, Larry. As Joe's younger son Chris plans to marry his brother Larry's former fiancée, Ann Deever, Ann's brother George confronts Joe about his complicity. The play builds to a devastating climax, showing the ethical compromises made in the pursuit of wealth and success.
Written in 1947 and based on a true news story, Miller wanted to portray the reality of wartime profiteering, where illicit fortunes were made by selling substandard materials to the armed services. He saw the play as a way to confront the moral compromises that occurred alongside the patriotic ideals of the war effort.
Also of note: Elmwood Playhouse was established in 1947!
