This is a fully funded Train the Trainer session, perfect for community activists and youth workers looking for the skills and confidence to create connections and heal divison in the communities they live or work in.
Ella Baker School of Organising : Our democracy is in danger, but the future is in our hands
The far-right internationally spread division as a strategy to gain power, but their real objective once in office is to stifle democracy itself, paving the way for draconian cuts in services, deregulation, the erosion of democratic principles, such as the separation of powers, respect for minority opinions, and the rule of law. Their plans would also accelerate the transfer of resources from the majority to an already unimaginably rich minority.
Meanwhile the England squad's run in the world cup showcased Britain at its best. The team was amongst the most diverse in the competition and their success a serious blow to the white supremacists who believe to be English is to be white. Examples like this are the opportunities we need to seize if we are to dispel the far- right's myths.
Sadly, there will also be many threats, incidents that mirror the tragic, but manipulated, events in Southampton or Southport, and quite possibly the more recent M**der of Ann Widdecombe. These are the opportunities the far-right will exploit to reinforce their narrative. To defeat them, and recreate an inclusive 'story of us', we have to make the best use of the opportunities that present themselves, and limit the far-right's ability to exploit the opportunities that arise for them.
Given we don't have a crystal ball, we cannot predict which opportunities or threats will arise, and therefore we will have to react to them in real time: there is no 'blueprint'. Which is why developing the networks and strategic capacity of community, trade union and anti-oppression activists is so important. Everyone will need to develop their leadership skills and be able to make judgements about what is the appropriate response in the context of their community.
This is why the Ella Baker School of Organising is determined to train 500 volunteer, community, trainers within the next 12 months. They will be equipped to share our materials in their communities. Perhaps more importantly, they will be equipped to convene local discussions about how to react in their communities to threats and opportunities that arise over the coming period. The first of these train the trainer sessions are going live, and there will be one in Cardiff on 27 November.
This year the Ella Baker School has trained over a 1,000 people in skills to defeat narratives of division, and over half of all attendees who fed back, scored the training as a maximum of 5 out of 5. Here is just one response from a group who commissioned the three day course:
