Ann Lowe was an influential fashion designer, specializing in American luxury fashion from the 1910s through the 1960s.
Although she created sumptuous gowns for the New York elite and dressed prominent women, including Jacqueline Kennedy, Olivia de Haviland, and Marjorie Merriweather Post, Lowe's story is practically unknown.
In this program, Dr. Elizabth Way, Curator of Costume and Accessories at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, will illustrate Lowe's fascinating, and sometimes tumultuous career, from the legacy of enslavement and Jim Crow to the Great Depression, World War II , and the Civil Rights era, to the inclusion of her creations in institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian.
Sponsored by Shirlee Harper and by Mary Zulu.
Refreshments at 9:30; talk begins at 10 am. Tickets are $12 and free to members. To learn more, visit https://www.fineartssocietyofpeoria.net/.
