Lincoln Library invites the community to experience the remarkable story of Elizabeth Packard through a powerful living presentation by acclaimed historical interpreter Laura Keyes.
In 1860, Elizabeth was committed to the Illinois State Hospital and held for three years, despite repeatedly asserting her sanity. Her husband, Theophilus Packard, had the legal authority at the time to institutionalize her without trial or medical examination. Throughout her confinement, Elizabeth never stopped speaking her truth. After securing her release, she dedicated herself to reforming the laws that allowed husbands to commit their wives without due process.
Keyes brings Elizabeth Packard’s story to life, sharing her courage, perseverance, and tireless campaign for legal reform. Through Packard’s own words, audiences will gain a vivid understanding of her experiences and the lasting impact of her advocacy.
