About this Event
Electrophone Salon is Sigal Music Museum’s new monthly gathering dedicated to the creative possibilities of electronic sound. Designed for musicians, producers, and curious listeners alike, and led by Chris Stack, the museum's Director of Marketing, each salon will blend live performances with practical tech tips and guided discussion focused on electronic music production and performance. With a non-exclusive emphasis on synthesizers—historic, contemporary, and experimental—the series invites participants to explore tools, techniques, and ideas that shape today’s electronic music landscape.
These events are free (with registration) and are informal, collaborative, and hands-on in spirit. Electrophone Salon creates a welcoming space to listen, learn, and connect around the art and craft of electronic sound.
January's Topic: Generative Music
About the name: "Electrophones" are musical instruments that create sound electronically, either entirely through circuitry (like synthesizers, theremins, drum machines) or by electronically amplifying a traditionally produced sound (like electric guitars/basses, electric pianos), requiring an amplifier and speaker for audible output, forming a category in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system. "Salon" in this sense is a gathering of people for intellectual discussion, as well as public exhibition and performance.
And a historical note—"Electrophone Salon" is not a new phrase. It was also used to describe a listening center, like a café or club, in London (Victorian/Edwardian era circa 1890s-1920s) where people paid to use special headsets to hear live theatre, music, and church services transmitted over telephone lines, acting as an early form of live-streaming before radio became popular.
