This evening is part of the South Wales Valleys tour of 'The Coal Beneath Our Feet, The Wind Above Our Heads' organised by Beth Winter and taking place between 23rd January and 10th March 2026. This powerful film takes us on a journey from the South Wales Valleys’ coal-fired past to a future driven by change and possibility.
2025 marked the 40th anniversary of the end of the 1984–85 miners’ strike, and the 30th anniversary of the reopening of Tower Colliery, the UK’s first worker-owned coal mine. One marked the end of an era. The other sparked a vision of hope.
Shot and directed by the phenomenal film maker Jeremy Clancy, who grew up in the Derbyshire coalfields and saw the extraction and damage to community first-hand, this documentary weaves the past and the future into a story of renewal.
Co-produced with local people across generations rooted in the communities of the Valleys, it captures the energy, frustration, and fierce pride of young people determined to shape a new future. It explores the possibility of a green industrial revolution that brings jobs, resources, justice, and sustainable power back to where it’s needed most.
“more than a film – it’s a call to action”
The film will be followed by Q & A sessions with the cast of the documentary and those involved in the quarry campaign and a community discussion around next steps.
Hollow Mountain explores the cumulative impact of quarry blasting, airborne silica dust, and the gradual erosion of green space surrounding the community of Glyncoch in South Wales. Through close observation of both landscape and daily life, it reveals how industrial activity has become an inescapable presence, shaping the environment, the health of residents, and the character of the place itself.
In doing so, the film raises urgent questions about decisions made by those in positions of power, often at a distance from the communities affected, and the imbalance between economic interests and environmental responsibility. It considers the long-term consequences of these choices, highlighting the vulnerability of the landscape and the quiet but profound toll on the people living in its shadow, whose voices are frequently overlooked, yet whose lives are most deeply affected.
The tour is supported by UNISON Cymru, National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union - BFAWU, The Communication Workers Union, St Elvan's, Coalfields Regeneration Trust - Wales, and Community Energy Wales.
