EICC Live - A Simpler Cosmology
About this Event
Recent observations reveal surprising simplicity and order in the universe, on both the largest and smallest visible scales. They are providing new clues about the fundamental laws of physics, suggesting simpler and more powerful unifying principles. Understanding the universe and its most basic laws helps us to appreciate our origins and place in the cosmos as well as the extraordinary possibilities which lie ahead. The profound knowledge we gain is not only humankind’s most precious possession, it's also completely free to share.
Professor Neil Turok
Neil is the inaugural Higgs Chair of Theoretical Physics at the University of Edinburgh. Neil develops and tests theories of the universe and its basic laws, from the big bang to the future. His team successfully predicted the observed correlations between the temperature and polarisation of the cosmic microwave background as well as other cosmic observables. After studies in Cambridge and Imperial College, Neil was Professor of Physics at Princeton, Chair of Mathematical Physics at Cambridge and Director of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada.
In 2003, Neil founded the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS). AIMS’s six centres, in South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon and Rwanda have over 5,000 Master’s and PhD alumni. Neil won a TED Prize and honorary doctorates from nine universities. His book, The Universe Within: From Quantum to Cosmos won Canada’s top prize for popular science writing. He won the John Torrence Tate award of the American Institute of Physics for international leadership in physics, is an Honorary Fellow of the UK Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the Royal Society of London and an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Professor Fulvio Militello
Fulvio Militello is Director of Tokamak Science and MAST-U at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, with over 20 years’ experience in fusion research. A former theoretical plasma physicist, he has worked across Europe and the US and authored more than 100 scientific papers.
He also serves as Adjunct Professor at Chalmers University and Visiting Reader at Imperial College London. Fulvio lives in the UK with his family and enjoys cooking, martial arts, philosophy and astronomy.
