About this Event

Five leading UK speakers on the topic from: The Concrete Centre, Leeds University, Lang O’rourke and Consultant engineers HRW.

Presentations will cover:

1. Efficient forms of construction covering (geometry, post tensioning, flat slab, beam and slab, efficient use of reinforcing and more). All practical advice similar to the Economic concrete Frame to EC2 publication.

2. Design and production of low Carbon concrete mixes and how to specify these mixes.

3. Analysis and Design methods to achieve efficient design and construction also analysis packages.

4. Modern Methods of Construction in Concrete efficient use and specification. Myth busting available.

5. Case Studies where efficient design and Construction was achieved. Will include concrete solutions from the under construction Monklands hospital and other nationally important projects. Along with validation.

Our speakers are:

Jenny Burridge (Technical Lead at the Concrete Centre)

Jenny’s presentation will cover Introduction to efficient concrete design, Efficient, economic frame design, Sustainability, low embodied carbon and low carbon construction

Jenny is a chartered civil and structural engineer. Prior to joining The Concrete Centre Jenny worked for several consulting engineers including Aecom and Arup, where she designed several award winning buildings. Jenny chairs the BSI strategic committee on Engineering Design and Construction and sits on the Construction and Built Environment Sector Policy and Strategy Committee. She is on the council of Construct and the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Michal Drewnoik (Assistant Professor at Leeds University)

Michał's presentation will focus on the design efficient design of reinforced concrete structures from early decisions stage to the materialisation of the structure. Presented steps and methods can allow the design to achieve more than 30% materials and embodied carbon savings compared to current practice.

Michal’s background is civil engineering and holds PhD in concrete technology. Michal has worked on the role of material efficiency in building conception and design in construction, including layout and member efficient design, and ways to achieve carbon reduction targets in UK construction. His current research focusses on minimising material, energy and embodied carbon in construction through dematerialisation and the development of low-embodied carbon concrete, as well as accelerating sustainable circular economy.

Jack Burvill (Explore Manufacturing Principal Engineer; Laing O’Rourke)

Jack and Grieg’s presentation will look at::

  • Efficient design: Decarbonising precast concrete – through design, products, and materials.
  • Efficient construction: Benefits (and challenges) of adopting precast on Scotland's biggest hospital.

Jack is a Chartered Structural Engineer with 19 years of industry experience, the majority specialising in precast concrete. Jack leads the engineering team and drives the decarbonisation agenda at Explore Manufacturing. Prior to this he worked at a tier one design consultancy, delivering complex structural solutions across a wide array of building forms and sectors.

Greig Mackenzie (Expanded Structures Principal Engineer; Laing O'Rourke).

Greig is a Structural Engineer with 12 years of industry experience, most of which has been spent delivering complex projects with Laing O’Rourke across the healthcare, retail, and research sectors. He currently leads the civil and structural engineering team on the Monklands Replacement Project, overseeing the successful delivery of a large precast frame using innovative structural solutions from Explore Manufacturing.

Martin Waters (Founding Director of engineers HRW )

Martin’s presentation will describe from concept through to completion an office building at Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire. The project incorporates a number of methods to carve out material from the flat slab default approach to this building typology, which has ultimately saved 10% or more concrete and reinforcement over a conventionally detailed flat slab construction.

Martin Waters is a co-founding director of engineers HRW, a London and Oxford based structural engineering consultancy established in 2001. He is a chartered structural engineer with particular interest in structurally expressive, minimum material and visual structures.
