Music Takes a Community
Every week across Edmonton, community musicians gather at open mics in neighborhood venues. Songwriters test new material. Retirees rediscover their love of performing. Music students gain confidence. Amateurs and professionals share the stage.
But community music is more than just performers. It's the open mic hosts who create welcoming spaces. The sound technicians who make voices heard. The venues that open their doors. The music educators passing on skills. The instrument repair shops keeping guitars in tune. The community leagues hosting events. The organizations advocating for artists.
On July 4th, we put the entire community on stage.
A Festival That Shows How Music Really Works
The Edmonton Open Mic Festival brings together eight stages representing different open mic communities across our city's neighborhoods. Each stage showcases the performers, hosts, and character of a different venue—from Alberta Avenue to the west side, from acoustic coffee shop sessions to beer garden jams.
120 paid performances celebrate the talent of community musicians who usually perform for the love of it.
One location reveals the interconnected ecosystem that keeps community music alive: the equipment suppliers, the event organizers, the sponsors, the volunteers, the audiences who show up week after week.
This isn't just a concert. It's a networking event for Edmonton's music community—a chance to see how all the parts connect, to meet the people behind the scenes, and to celebrate the community spirit that makes music possible.
