After its inception in 1920s Paris, Surrealism quickly became international. The exhibition Dreamworld: Surrealism at 100 provides a unique opportunity to explore how this movement manifested and metamorphosized in North America.
It features works by Surrealist artists living in Mexico City (such as Frida Kahlo and Remedios Varo) and New York City (such as Joseph Cornell and Dorothea Tanning). For this panel, scholars Tere Arcq, Lewis Kachur, and Mark Polizzotti discuss art and artists related to these two geographical hubs of Surrealism and the historical and political events that influenced them. Exhibition curator Matthew Affron moderates this panel.
