Overview
Economic abuse can be one of the hardest forms of harm to recognise in a money conversation.
It often sits behind crisis debt, missed bills, restricted access to income, coerced borrowing, damaged credit, housing instability and fear about taking financial decisions.
Economic abuse can also form part of a wider pattern of coercive control, making it harder for people to recognise what is happening, disclose their experiences, or safely act on the options available to them.
Economic Abuse in Practice is a practical, in-person learning event designed for Money Guiders and frontline practitioners who want greater confidence in recognising the signs of economic abuse, responding safely and sensitively, and connecting people with specialist support.
Throughout the day, attendees will hear from organisations working across debt advice, money guidance, domestic abuse support and survivor advocacy, offering a unique opportunity to explore economic abuse from multiple perspectives.

Beyond Financial Control: Understanding Economic Abuse, Coercive Control and the Power of the Right Support - Domestic Abuse Alliance
Joanne McGuiness of the Domestic Abuse Alliance will share:
- The lived experience of coercive control and economic abuse
- How abuse affects confidence, decision-making and help-seeking
- What practitioners need to understand beyond the financial indicators
- What helped, what did not help, and what good professional support looks like
This session will help practitioners look beyond the presenting money issue and better understand the human impact behind financial harm, fear, control, and restricted choice.
Local Pathways, Safeguarding and Support - Brighton & Hove DASS / Victim Support
We will also be joined by speakers from Brighton & Hove Domestic Abuse Specialist Service (DASS) / Victim Support, who will bring a local support and referral pathway perspective.
Brighton & Hove DASS / Victim Support will explore:
- Local domestic abuse support pathways
- Safeguarding considerations for frontline practitioners
- Referral routes and mechanisms
- How DASS can support people experiencing domestic abuse and economic harm
This session will help attendees understand what suport is available, what happens after a referral, and how money guidance practitioners can work safely alongside specialist domestic abuse services.
