Eco-Printing & Flower Pounding with Leah Sanchez
About this Event
Workshop Description
Join us for a hands-on eco-printing workshop and create patterns and colours on fabric using plants and flowers. Participants will learn how to arrange, bundle, and steam plant materials, as well as use flower pounding techniques to transfer natural dyes onto fabric.
In this 3-hour workshop, participants will gain a basic understanding of how to prepare cotton and linen for natural dyeing through a presentation by the facilitator. Participants will leave with a cotton tote bag and fabric samples they have eco-printed themselves.
All materials will be provided. Fabric will be prepared for natural dyeing prior to the workshop. All skill levels are welcome.
About the Facilitator
Originally from the Philippines, Leah moved to Toronto 10 years ago, where she has been diving deeper into the rabbit hole of a textile-based creative practice. As an architect and avid upcycler, she has a strong interest in material exploration and thoughtful making.
Working at the Education department of the Textile Museum of Canada was instrumental in deepening her ongoing love affair with textiles. She co-founded Works-In-Progress, an artist collective that explores creative ways to reuse textile waste. She has led workshops through both these organizations and facilitated workshops at YWCA 1st Stop Woodlawn through support from the Toronto Arts Council and Ontario Arts Council.
Known for her open teaching style, Leah encourages experimentation and curiosity, inviting participants to learn through hands-on discovery. She splits her time between Ontario and Batangas province in the Philippines (currently setting up an artist residency there), experimenting with local plants for dyeing and ink making in both places.
