About this Event
Ingushetia is one of the smallest regions in Russia, nestled between mountains and green valleys in the North Caucasus, bordering Georgia to the south. Despite being one of the smallest regions in the North Caucasus, it has a rich history and vibrant culture. After Perestroika, there was instability, poverty, and violence. In 2012, Milana Albakova arrived in the UK with her two children. She calls the UK her Second Motherland, “because it gave me a chance to rebuild my life with dignity and hope”.
This project brings visibility to the Ingush community, a group that is almost invisible in public life in the UK, including Gloucester. By sharing traditional music, cultural symbols, and a personal refugee story, the event helps to expand the city’s understanding of its diverse residents. It gives migrant families from the Caucasus a rare opportunity to see their culture represented and celebrated. At the same time, it invites local residents to learn about a part of the world they may know little about, fostering connection, empathy, and shared belonging — all of which are vital for a strong and inclusive Gloucester.
This is a free event, featuring an earlier session for families and children, followed by a break with traditional food, and an afternoon session of performances and talks.
You are booking for the 11.30 - 12.30 session - Family and children’s activities will include building Ingush towers from LEGO, and painting the Ingush flag and ancient solar symbol of Magas, Ingushetia’s Capital.
Please see our wesbite to book for the other two sessions.
