EBMUD Underworld: A Halloween Wastewater Tour, 10am (must be 10yo+)

Tickets are available to reserve starting 10/09/2025 at exactly 8pm for this 10/25/2025 10am tour. (Four tickets maximum per reservation. All attendees need a ticket, attendee name must be provided for each ticket.) Entrance at 2020 Wake Ave., Oakland only.

Step beyond the veil of the ordinary and explore where all drains lead—through shadowy channels, eerie pipes, and bubbling cauldrons of transformation.

Along the way, uncover spooky secrets of the microscopic monsters that feast on waste, and witness how science and engineering work their magic to protect our communities and the Bay.

Dress for the occasion (zombies, mummies and demons welcome) , and prepare for a hauntingly educational experience that proves even the underworld can have a happy ending.

Your safety is our top priority as you journey through the realm beneath. The treatment plant is alive and working—its pathways filled with rumbling iron beasts (heavy trucks) and swirling currents of activity.

Beware: the path ahead may lead you up narrow stairways, across uneven ground, and through chambers filled with eerie odors and the flapping wings of feathered spirits (birds).

To protect yourself in the underworld:

• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required—your armor for the journey.
• No masks that cover your face.
• No costumes that drag, snag, or create a tripping hazard.

Only those prepared with safe attire may pass through the gates. Enter wisely, and tread carefully!

No day-of sign-ups are permitted.

· Are there age restrictions?

Yes. All attendees must be at least 10 years old or older; children 10+ can take the tour if accompanied by an adult. All attendees need their own ticket with their name.

· Where do I park?

Park in the visitor parking area marked with an orange sign. If it’s full, park along the fence near the security check-in/guard booth. Your tour guide will meet the group in the visitor parking lot. There is no need to check in with the security guard.

· When should I arrive?

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the tour start time to get checked in and sign your waiver.

· Can I come if I can't go up stairs with the group?

No. The group must stay together and standard tours are not designed to accommodate mobility issues. The tour involves 2 hours of walking and climbing stairs.

· Do I have to wear anything special?

You must wear closed toe shoes. Also, the plant can be windy or sunny or cold, so plan layers.

Comfortable, closed-toe shoes need to be worn. No sandals, high heels or open-toed shoes allowed. Any attendee not having the proper footwear will not be allowed to take the tour.

· Can I come if I arrive late, after the tour start time?

No. Attendees who arrive late will not be able to take the tour. The group will be inside the locked facility.

· Do I have to sign anything?

Yes. Upon arrival, all tour attendees must sign a liability release waiver. To read the waiver beforehand, visit our website or click here to download.

· Do I need to bring ID?

Yes. All adults will need to show photo identification to take the tour.

· Can I snack while we walk?

No. Water is allowed but please do not bring in any other food or drink item.

· Can I take photos?

No. Attendees shall not take photographs during the tour.

• This treatment plant is an active, fully operational plant with heavy truck traffic. Be aware and alert at all times. Stay with the group on one side of the road.

• Stay out of barricaded and/or construction areas.

• EBMUD reserves the right to cancel tours. If a tour is cancelled, we will try to notify you at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled tour.

All participants should wash or disinfect their hands immediately following the tour and before eating.
